The
West Front is Romanesque Revival and was constructed of Pewee Valley
limestone in 1870-71, replacing the original single brick bell tower
constructed in 1824.
2 The Westminster Peal, in the south tower, four bronze bells ranging in size from 700 to 3,500 lbs. and cast by the Meneely Bell Co. of Troy, NY, in 1898 and given in memory of Andrew Jackson Ballard and Fanny Thruston Ballard by their sons. It was restored in 1987 with a gift in memory of Helen Jane Hudson Hodges, by her daughter Ann Sinclair Hodges Hassett.
3 The Cloister and Diocesan Memorial
Garden were completed in June 2000 with a gift of Mrs.
Harry S. Frazier, Jr., and her children, in memory of Harry S.
Frazier, Jr., late husband and father of the donors. The wrought
iron fence and gates were designed and fabricated by Craig Kaviar of
Kaviar Forge, Louisville. The Garden Committee, commemorated by a
plaque on the South Tower, began the 'Cloister Garden' in 1957.
4 The Wicker Memorial Fountain,
featuring the image of St. Francis of Assisi preaching to the birds,
was given in memory of The Very Reverend Norvell E. Wicker, Dean
from 1944 to 1963, by the parish. A wrought iron cross below the
fountain marks the grave of Leo the Magnificat, the much-loved stray
Siamese cat who, in 1996, became the subject of a book of that name
by bestselling children's author Ann M. Martin, illustrated by Emily
Arnold McCully.
